What is the Libido Definition?
Libido, or sex drive, is the level of desire for sex. It involves the physical and emotional energy that you have towards sex. Libido is often highest in young people including teens and young adults. With most people, libido does decline with age, menopause, life style changes and stress.
What is a Libido Booster?
A libido booster, or libido enhancer, is a safe and natural supplement containing herbs, vitamins, minerals, super-foods, or a combination of these that are proven to increase sex drive. They work by increasing the body’s natural production of hormones that effect libido, such as testosterone. Due to today’s hectic lifestyles and poor diets, most people are lacking in the natural vitamins that promote energy, stamina and general well-being that stimulates sex drive. There are many factors that contribute to a healthy libido and most people are lacking in several areas that can be simply fixed with an all-natural libido boosting supplement.
What’s the difference between a libido booster and medication such as Viagra?
Prescription drugs such as Viagra (Sildenafil) are used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. Viagra is well known for this use but it’s use for women is not clear. Other similar drugs in Cialis and Levitra.
These medications are drugs and come with risks of side effects such as headaches, heart burn, flushed skin and in some cases can even cause hearing loss and impaired vision! In rare cases they can also cause prolonged erections, causing damage to the penis.
Rather than actually increasing your libido, these drugs are increasing blood flow to the genital areas at the time they are taken.
On the other hand, natural libido enhancers are safe and do not have any serious side effects as they are all natural. They work to gradually increase your libido, with most of them being taken as a daily supplement. The effects are longer lasting and actually help to get you in the mood for sex, as well as increasing blood flow to the genitals.
Why Should You Consider Boosting Your Libido?
Do you want more sex? Do you want to feel closer to your partner? Do you have a healthy sex life but are you concerned that this will fade, and you want it to continue?
There is a common misconception that women are always the ones with the low libido and men are switched on and ready to go all of the time. In actual fact, both sexes suffer commonly from a lack of sex drive. In a survey by a sex therapist, when people wrote in complaining that there wasn’t enough sex in the relationship, 40% of the time it was the man in the relationship that had the low sex drive.
It’s important in any relationship to be on the same page when it comes to how much sex we want to have. If one partner wants sex more than the other, natural libido boosters can help both parties.
Sometimes the libido has been low for so long, that the person suffering from it loses interest and no longer cares whether the issue is solved. So why care? Sex is an important part of a healthy romantic relationship. True, it should not be the most important thing. But a sex-less relationship means that you risk losing the intimacy and closeness that you once had with your partner. Here at Love Your Libido, we think it’s worth working for a healthy relationship, and a healthy sex life.
What Are the Causes of Low Libido?
So why does libido decrease?
Take it from me, my partner and I have experience with some of the major causes for low libido in women as well as low libido in men. I had several roadblocks happening at once which isn’t unusual. Due to this my partner and I were having a bit of a dry spell and neither of us were happy about it. I’ll list the main factors that play a part in causing low libido below. As you read through, think about whether these factors may relate to you. At first you might think, “nah, that isn’t relevant to me,” but you might be surprised just what might be going on in your body.
Relationship Issues
This is obviously going to be a big one. All relationships change over time. Usually a loss of libido happens in a long term relationship where that initial spark has died down. Losing the spark is only natural. Long term relationships take work to keep things going. If you’re in an unhappy relationship, sex is not going to be at the top of your to-do list. For intimacy in the bedroom to happen, you have to be intimate friends first. A relationship is like a plant. Nourish it, water it and care for it and it will thrive. Neglect it and it will wilt and die. Communication is the key to nourishing a relationship. You need to be open, upfront and honest with each other if you want to be close. If both of you want to improve the relationship then seek help in the form of counselling or whatever avenue is best for you as a couple. When you are close, love and trust each other, the intimacy will come.
Fatigue
“Not tonight honey, I’m tired,” is a well-known line that you have probably used yourself at one point or another. But if you feel this way all the time you can quickly lose your mojo.
We all experience fatigue from time to time but if it’s constant then it may be time to re-assess your health and lifestyle. Are you over-worked? Could it be a medical issue? If you are stretching yourself too thin you will eventually burn out so investigate causes and see what you can do. Sometimes a break is all that is needed. It may be time to refresh and take a holiday, even just a quick weekend away can work wonders.
Hormone Levels
We can’t always see our hormone levels but they can have major effects on our bodies. So many women are suffering due to their hormone levels being all out of whack and so often they don’t even realise it. You can get hormone levels checked via a blood test but levels can also fluctuate a lot meaning that test results may not always show the problem.
Hormone imbalances may make you tired, affect your appetite, affect mood swings like crazy, make you depressed and/or anxious and of course wreak havoc on your libido. Diet, exercise, some medical conditions and medications can all have an effect on your hormones. Which brings me to my next point, hormonal contraception…
Hormonal Contraception (Such as The Pill)
I’ve always thought it is ironic that a medication designed to prevent pregnancies and allow you to have sex without worrying about it, does so by making you not want to have sex at all. Super reliable contraception! This doesn’t happen to all women who take hormonal contraception but it does happen to many women and some don’t realise what an effect it can have. This applies to all hormonal contraception methods. Think about it: you are altering your hormones. Of course this is going to affect the things that hormones play a role in. Did you know that being on the pill can even affect the type of man that you are attracted to?
I’ve spoken to and read about several women who got their libido back with a vengeance as soon as they stopped using hormonal contraception and that is the only thing that they needed to change. One friend told me it was like being a teenager again: she just couldn’t keep her hands off her man. I bet he was happy about that!
Understandably though, many women can’t just quit using contraception. Non-hormonal contraceptive methods aren’t as reliable. But if you think that your contraception is preventing you from getting in the mood altogether then it is worth having a think about your options. Intimacy is important in a relationship and usually neither party really wants to have a relationship with little to no sex. You could take a break and let your body balance out to see whether this is the cause for your low libido and use other non-hormonal contraceptive methods temporarily. You could also try changing to a different pill or to a different hormonal contraception because they are all different and all women are different so even if it is using similar hormones, each option affects various women in different ways. There are some hormonal contraception options that work just as well but contain less hormones. Unfortunately, no contraceptive method is perfect (yet). We won’t go through every contraception option here. Talk to your doctor or gynaecologist to see what is best for you.
Menopause
When you realize how important your hormones are and what can happen when they aren’t balanced, it’s no surprise that menopause can affect libido. Some women may wonder if there is any hope for their sex lives once they hit menopause. But there is no reason that women shouldn’t be able to have happy and fulfilling sex lives at any age.
Medications
If you are on regular medications, have a read through the information that comes with them and speak to your doctor if you have concerns about the medication affecting libido. There are stacks of medications that can affect libido occasionally even making it higher but more often than not, making it low. One type of medication that is commonly known to cause your libido to take a nose dive is anti-depressants. On the plus side, there are many brands and you may be able to switch to something that is more suitable for you. Some medications also cause vaginal dryness making it difficult to achieve proper lubrication. Speak to your doctor straight away if you are ever concerned about any side effects from medicines, including low libido.
Diet and exercise
Our diet affects our energy levels, metabolism, our hormones and our mood. It is our body’s fuel so it affects pretty much everything that the body does. The saying, ‘You are what you eat,’ has plenty of merit to it. You only get out what you put in. The healthier you are, the better you feel. The better you feel, the sexier you are able to feel too. If you’re often feeling heavy, bloated, gassy and tired you aren’t likely to be in the mood for lovin’. Stick to freshly prepared wholesome and nutritious meals that are low in fat. Avoid processed foods wherever possible. If you struggle with knowing where to start with your diet, you can do your own research or see a nutritionist to help you out. Start out by seeing your GP.
Exercise is also important. We live in a world where everyone is sedentary sitting in front of screens all the time. This makes us more tired so we rest and stay still even more. We need to get out there and MOVE! A simple half hour walk a day is an easy place to start and that alone can make a big difference if you haven’t been exercising at all. If you’re tired, exercise can actually help to give you an energy boost and wake you up. Getting out in fresh air and sunshine will also do wonders and you can usually notice a difference straight away in the way you feel. If you feel invigorated and healthy and have more energy you can keep that vibe going and boost your mojo as well.
Don’t forget: sex is exercise so the more you do it, the more you may want to do it!
Alcohol
Sometimes, a little bit of alcohol can get us in the mood. Research has shown that one drink can help us to get turned on and increase lubrication. Red wine has been shown to be one of the best options for this. Unfortunately though, too much alcohol can also make it harder to achieve arousal and orgasms. Alcohol can also leave you feeling fatigued the next day and start the vicious cycle of feeling flat and unmotivated. So drink in moderation, just one or two!
Stress
Who feels like having sex when stressed? Not me! Your mind is wandering and thinking about the things you are stressing about rather than thinking about sexy thoughts. They say your brain is your biggest sex organ because if you think sexy, you can become aroused more easily. But if you are stressing about work, bills, family, etc, your mind can’t relax enough to get in the mood.
Child birth and raising children
If you have recently had a baby it’s perfectly normal for your sex life to be put on hold. Take your time and don’t put pressure on yourself while things are still settling down.
Having kids around can be a challenge. If they are young children they will take up all your time and energy. It can also be hard to get a moment to yourselves as a couple or get the privacy to be intimate when there are little ones around.
Could you try hiring a baby sitter once a week and having a set date night where you can relax child-free and have some alone time? Maybe you can drop the kids off at relatives place and have a mini romantic get-away to re-ignite the spark.
Self confidence & Body Image
If you loathe your body and don’t feel sexy it can be super difficult to get in the mood. You need to get to the root (pun intended) of the issue here and get your self-esteem up where it is meant to be. Your partner is with you because they love you as you are. If you truly believe that you are sexy then you will be sexy! If you aren’t happy with something about your body then you have two options: change what you aren’t happy with or accept it and embrace yourself the way you are. For example you can either go on a diet or you can learn to love your curves.
Smoking
Here’s another reason to kick the habit: smoking has been proven to have a detrimental effect on blood flow to the genital regions as it causes the blood vessels to narrow. It also saps your stamina and besides, who wants to kiss an ashtray?!
As you have seen, your health and your hormones play a major role in your libido. The great thing about libido enhancers is that they also help to balance your hormones and they are natural and safe so they can be used with most other medications too. If you aren’t sure which is the right product for you, I recommend starting out with the Libido Booster Reviews for Women or the Libido Booster Reviews for Men.
